On My Radar

“Gansett”

Narragansett, RI

Narragansett has so much to offer.  Whether you’re going to the beach for the day or want to explore.  There are tons of places to eat and evening events.  Bars, breweries and vineyards.  I have been to Narragansett many times.  Sometimes staying with friends, or going to the beach for the day.  Thanks to my friends Christine and David, I know some of the local secrets!  There are tons of date ideas that I will post when I revisit.  A definite for a day or weekend trip as well!  For now, here’s all that I know about this wicked fun place!

All the beaches are nice.  I have only been to a couple of them.  My friend was kind enough to write a little insight on each beach, since she is a local……

Beaches in RI are some of the best in New England.  Narragansett is home to 4 of the most popular beaches in RI.

Scarborough Beach

Scarborough State Beach is Rhode Island’s most popular beach, located on Ocean Road and spans 26 acres.  It is comprised of 2 combined beaches (North and South).  There are 3 very large pay, parking lots and seasonal passes available.  All lots have resident/non-resident pricing.  This is a very large beach, with chair and umbrella rentals available, newer pavilion, showers, restrooms, food, picnic areas – including day parking for campers, an observation tower, shaded shelters, and a boardwalk which is great to oversee everything.  Also accessible via bus.  Boogie boards are allowed here as well and the waves are just fantastic!  As with all state parks – carry in and carry out is the policy.  Also, walking distance to a couple of small shops, takeout restaurant and ice cream.

Narragansett Town Beach

Narragansett Town beach is in a lovely spot in the center of town near Memorial park and a view of The Towers.  There are several parking lots, cabanas, restrooms, first-aid, ADA surf chairs, food and activities available such as Surfing lessons.  Unless you are lucky enough to snag a parking spot on 1 of the nearby roads, you will pay to park (Cash only), as well as, an Admission fee per person.  Seasonal Passes are available for Residents.  The waves are great here for boogie boarding and surfing.  The beach is clean and beautiful.  There are some restaurants and shops within walking distance – throw on a coverup and head to the Coast Guard house outdoor or rooftop bars after soaking up the sun!

I have only been to this beach once.  But they have a concert on the beach every Monday night.  When we were there last there was an awesome band.  You can sit on the sand and have a beer and enjoy music!  Also, in between the beach and the Coast Guard House, there is a grassy area where they have free concerts as well.  Be sure to bring a cooler and a chair!

Roger Wheeler State Beach

Roger Wheeler State Beach (formerly known as Sand Hill Cove) is a favorite for families and those with small children.  The beautiful beach is protected by the Block Island Sound so the waters here are pretty gentle.  Not really recommended for boogie boarding.  There’s a lovely new pavilion with restrooms, showers, snacks.  Other bonuses for small children include a playground and a small aquarium.  Not really walking distance to anything else.

Salty Brine State Beach

Salty Brine State Beach on Great Road is in a great spot, but it fills up fast and is pretty small.  This abuts George’s Restaurant, with a walkup window, as well as other restaurants and shops within walking distance.  George’s also has a small outdoor bar and seating overlooking the water.  A wonderful spot to watch all of the boats going in and out of the breach way.  The newer pavilion includes a concession stand, restrooms, and showers.  Also abuts a lovely boardwalk right on the breach way.  Parking can be tough in the area, so get there early!

Ocean Road

If you follow Ocean Road from Narragansett Town Beach it will take you all the way to Point Judith Light House.  It’s a nice scenic route along the water and beaches.  Along the way you will also see beautiful real estate, B&B’s, and restaurants.

Dinner with Christine & David

There is something for everyone!   Of coarse there is the famous Georges and Iggys.  The Coast Guard House is one of my favorites just because before we sit we sit outside on the rocks in an Adirondack chair and look at the ocean with a nice drink.  To me, in the summer, that is the ultimate.  It’s a little on the fancy side in the evening but has a roof top bar!   Another favorite, Turtle Soup, more casual.  Again, they have a little grassy area out front where you can sit and have drinks.  You can eat out there also if you like.  And my favorite breakfast place is Crazy Burger Cafe & Juice Bar.  I still have a lot of exploring to do as far as restaurants go, so that’s why I am putting the link to all the restaurants.  And of course the best ones I will save for date night posts!!

Galilee

Arial of Galilee
Girls day on Block Island

Galilee is the marina and fishing community.  You can pick up fresh lobster off the boat here.  There are fishing charters, bars & restaurants, and whale watching trips.  The ferry to Block Island leaves from here as well.  That is a whole other post!  Block island is super fun especially if you want to hang out on the beach.  They serve fancy drinks in pineapples and really good food right to your beach chair!  There are tons of shops and bars to explore too.

Breweries & Wineries

I have been to a few of the Breweries.  I loved them and I will be making those date night posts!!!  Sons of Liberty is a whiskey distillery.  They serve samples and make excellent signature drinks.  They give tours as well.  Whalers is another one I love.  It’s a brewery.  You can bring your own food or usually there is an awesome barbeque truck right outside.  They have cornhole inside too.  It’s fun and worth the food and beer!  There’s a lot of other places to check out, here are some links to get you started….
