Breakfast at “The Pie in the Sky”

Our plan was to go to the “Vineyard” for the day and then stay at the Woods Hole Inn that I had previously made reservations for that evening.  Since we arrived super early in Woods Hole, we grabbed a quick bite at this great outdoor breakfast place called, “Pie in the Sky”.  Good to get there early because it’s obviously very popular.  They had great sandwiches and pastries.  We got a croissant sandwich with chourico, egg and cheese!  Yummy!

Our ferry left at 8:35.  Tickets are cheap, $8.50 each way if you are a walk on passenger.  You can take a vehicle over as well.   If you want to explore the island you can take your car or rent a jeep, bike, moped, get a cab or take a bus.  There is so much to do in Oak Bluffs that we rather not bring a vehicle and I am not sure what restrictions there are now because of COVID.  Since we are staying at the Woods Hole Inn that night, they were kind enough to let us park in their private parking area.  They didn’t open until 8:00 so we were a little behind.  The manager went out of her way to make sure we didn’t miss the ferry by giving us a ride in her personal vehicle.  I was very impressed by their customer service.

The ferry was not overcrowded and everyone wore their masks.  However, as soon as we were under way a lot of people took off their masks on the outside deck.  We chose to keep ours on.  It only took 45 minutes to arrive at Oak Bluff, Martha’s Vineyard.

Cottage City

Once we picked up a coffee we went for a really nice walk through Cottage City.  In the 1800’s people gathered here for annual religious gatherings and retreats.  What started out as tents started to become cottages and a small community.  Now it is a beautiful peaceful place where you can rent and stay in one of these “gingerbread” cottages.

The Shops

There are a lot of little shops to check out.  Plenty of places to pick up your “Black Dog” sweatshirts and your “Vineyard Vines” t-shirts!  In between all these shops are great places to eat breakfast if you haven’t already!

The LookOut Tavern

Because of COVID things have changed a lot on the island.  We used to always go and enjoy a few apps and drinks and move on to the next “watering hole”.  But now you have to order a meal and you are on a time limit.  We definitely felt a little rushed.  I understand they have less space and there is a waiting list.  So make sure you make reservations for where ever you intend on eating.  The Outlook Tavern is a great place to get a view of the ocean while enjoying your meal.  Very casual, beachy feel.  We had some oysters, lobster bisque, and sandwiches.  Nancy’s is one of our favorite places to go as well.

Oak Bluffs Town Beach

There is a beach right where you get off the ferry.  Important, the public restrooms are there as well.  We spent some time sitting on the beach.  It was a beautiful day.  If you intend on swimming don’t forget to wear a bathing suit and bring a towel!  We brought a backpack cooler, so we sat and had a cold drink, wink!

Woods Hole Inn

Once we returned back to Woods Hole, we checked into the Woods Hole Inn.  What a friendly staff.  Great customer service.  The place is updated, clean, and the bed was so comfortable!  I would highly recommend this place.  It’s located right in the middle of everything.  There are restaurants, taverns, coffee shops and ice cream shops all within walking distance.  Because of COVID, they can not serve breakfast, but they offer a small continental breakfast.  Outside you can order food through a take out window and there is a nice seating area right behind the building.  It is open to the street where you can watch the bustling of people.  The walk to the ferry is literally about 1 minute and you can see them coming and going.  I loved this place!

Water Street Kitchen

Our Inn recommended this place for dinner since it was our anniversary.  It was excellent.  Very fresh food, right from the garden etc.  Rob got a Seared Yellowfin Tuna dish with lentils, roasted fennel and cucumber tomato salad and I got Scallops in a pistachio goddess dressing with shiitake mushrooms, blackberries, green onion and greens .  Cozy nice place and you don’t have to get too dressed up.  Delicious!

The next morning, we tried another breakfast/coffee place, Coffee Obsession, and headed home.  No matter where you go in this area, the customer service is friendly and inviting.  Even at the coffee places.
